Transit is a critical tool to make our streets safer, reduce traffic congestion, relieve pressure on street parking, improve air quality, increase community interaction, and fight poverty. We need improved fixed route regional transit as well as a local fixed route trolley. Transit is a matter of equity, not everyone has the privilege of owning a car, or the ability to obtain a driver's license. There are also many people in Carlisle who cannot afford car ownership, yet are forced to own and maintain one to get by. There are also numerous people who should not be driving because of various impairments or distractions yet do so because of the lack of viable alternatives. Forcing people into cars who would otherwise use an alternative, harms our community, and costs the most vulnerable Carlislians.
How do we do this?
Local Fixed Route Trolley We have the ability to create a local trolley for Carlisle. This would likely require community buy in and a feasibility study of some kind to develop a route based on community input. Along with an information and advertisement campaign to inform the community of its availability. Regional Transit While borough council lacks the ability to unilaterally create regional transit. We can encourage it as a council. We can put our support behind expanding the hours of operation for the fixed route CAT bus hours of operation and encourage weekend service, while also voicing support for development of corridor one or the capital red rose |
